Zee Tamizh joins ‘crowd’

There is never enough for the Tamil Audience. Maximum films and maximum entertainment channels are all down the vindiyas. 23 active channels exclusive of religious one’s, 10.3 million entertained people, 690 crores advertisement revenue, etc etc the list goes on. Now the government is also busy dolling out free television which would swell the numbers further. So it is obvious many are willing to join the crowd. Zee Tamizh has started yesterday. NDTV, Kanchi etc are in the pipeline.

This is the 33rd channel from Zee, the first private channel of India. So it is needless to say that they are equipped with state of the art technology and technical knowhow plus content and rights for serials game shows which need only to be refined to suit the eyes of the Tamils. They have their own DTH and money should not be a problem. But this is Zee’s second entry to Tamil. Their first attempt Bharathi channel was aborted in the middle for unstated reasons.

Tamil viewers are choosy but steadfast in their viewing habits. So big names do not matter. What attracts them is still a big question, but it should attract them is the important rule of the game.

Their line-up of serials are meant to tempt the Tamil viewer: K Balachander’s serial that deals with a father-daughter relationship. And then there’s Avalukendru Oru Manam, by Kamala Sadagopan — the story of a woman who sacrifices her priorities for a cause. Azhagana Ratchasee is all about a young rural girl who migrates to the big bad city – and life turns upside down. “Tamil Nadu isn’t just Chennai — it lives in Salem, Coimbatore and Trichy also, so our serials will carry characters that connect with these places.” Then there is Rudra, the title role played by Kushboo who is its producer and writter. Rudhra, incidentally, focusses on the life of a woman who’s a full-fledged professional — a lawyer.Shanker Mahadevan sings for Imaan’s music in Rudra.

“Every woman plays different roles in her life,” Kushboo says. “She’s a mother, sister, daughter, child, wife — and she has to be all these things, all the time. In between living through these roles and fulfilling their constant demands, there’s a time when she’ll reach the borderline. A saturation point. And such a time happens in the life of every woman. That’s what Rudhra is all about.”

Zee Tamil has a variety of game shows and competitions: the trump-card is SaReGaMa Sangeetha Mahayuddham, the grand dame of music shows, in which the winners of shows such as AirTel Super Singer and others, from Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil will compete in the 6-12 age group. Sounds like a whopper, especially with judges like Usha Uthup and Sowmya. There are others too, like D for Dance, which again, is a dance competition. They also have a program called Adrasakkai which is an adoptation of the a Snake and Ladder game.

They have acquired rights of over 40 films released in 2007-2008, but mostly average and below average grossers. Their news are mostly read by ex Jaya news host just to show that the churn is on. The content and style show we have one more. It is not visible in SCV areas and when asked they said talks are on and may be by this week things will be sorted out. It is available with Arasu cable. Dish TV etc. It is a pay channel and expects to break even in three years. They have allocated a budget of 5 crores for initial promotion and are ready to spend more for further reach.
